The Gardasil HPV vaccine protects women against the two most high risk strains of Human Papilloma Virus ( HPV) type 16 and 18, which have been responsible for the majority of high grade cervical changes and cervical cancers. This vaccine also protects against the two strains which are most commonly responsible for causing genital warts, type 6 and 11. This protection is only effective if a woman has not already been exposed to those particular strains of HPV. For this reason it is useful vaccinating girls before they are likely to have been exposed to these common, sexually transmitted viruses.
