There are lots of different subtypes of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV).
HPV testing can be performed to look for for the certain subgroups of HPV that can cause cervical cancer. This is ususlly done on a liquid based cytology specimen (eg Thinprep) and the sample is taken just like having a Pap smear. HPV is a private test in Australia unless you have had a previous high-grade abnormal Pap smear and fit certain medicare criteria (http://www.cancerscreening.gov.au/internet/screening/publishing.nsf/Content/cv-hpv-dna) - check with the lab your doctor uses for costs.
it is not currently possible to test for other types of HPV eg the ones that cause genial warts.
