About Dr Nishantha Wijesinghe

Dr Nishantha Wijesinghe is an Australian-based health professional. Nishantha is trained as an Ophthalmologist (Eye Specialist) and practices in Tiwi and Stuart Park.

Special interests

Dr Wijesinghe has been an eye surgeon for over 20 years and is a senior ophthalmology consultant at Royal Darwin Hospital. He is a highly skilled cataract surgeon, performing premium intraocular lens implants including toric, multifocal and extended depth of focus lenses. He is a fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologist (RANZCO) and has been an examiner for the RANZCO clinical eye exam (OBCK) for the last 4 years. Additionally, he sits as a committee member in RANZCO’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Eye Health Committee (ATSIEHC), advocating for better eye health in NT’s indigenous population.   Dr Wijesinghe is a comprehensive general ophthalmologist. He performs cataract surgery, pterygium surgery, eye lid surgery (including blepharoplasty), minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) and anterior segment surgery at the Darwin Private Hospital. He does procedures such as different types of lasers (SLT/YAG), minor lid procedures, intra vitreal Lucentis/Eylea injections for macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and retinal vein occlusions at his NT Eye Specialists clinic.  Dr Wijesinghe is also a Designated Aviation Ophthalmologist, performing eye exams for pilots and air traffic controllers.

2008: Fellowship in paediatric ophthalmology and general ophthalmology, Save Sight Institute, University of Sydney, Australia.

2005: MD (Doctor of Medicine in Ophthalmology), Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka.
